A Bristol Family Business, 15 Years In

We are Bearwood Design, a father and son team working on wooden floors across Bristol. Between us we have spent 15 years lifting, sanding, repairing and finishing the boards in this city's houses, from Victorian pine in Bishopston to engineered oak in a new Clifton kitchen.

We take on one job at a time and we give it the days it actually needs. No skipped grits, no thin coat of lacquer over a floor that was never prepped properly, no van pulling away before the finish has gone off.

Quality Over Speed, Every Time We would rather do one floor properly than three in a hurry. When we hand a room back it is finished, and it is finished to last.

FAQ

A single room is usually two to three days: sanding, any repairs and gap filling, then the coats of finish with drying time between them. A whole ground floor takes longer. We give you a realistic number on the quote rather than a hopeful one.
Far less than people expect. Our sanders run on dust extraction, we seal off the room where we can, and we clean up at the end of every day. It is still a building job, but you will not be finding dust in the kitchen cupboards a month later.
Usually, yes. Paint, black bitumen, gaps, split boards and old patch repairs are all normal and all fixable. We will tell you honestly if a floor is too far gone rather than take the job and hope.
Yes. Bristol's older houses are full of gappy pine. Depending on the floor we fill with resin and dust or slot in timber slivers, then sand the lot flat so the repair disappears into the board.
Hardwax oil or lacquer, depending on the room and how you live in it. We will talk you through the look and the upkeep of each and let you decide with a sample in front of you.
No. The room being worked on needs to be clear and stay clear while the finish cures, but you can carry on living in the rest of the house. We plan the order of rooms around that.
Because we do the preparation. The grit sequence, the repairs, the gap filling and the drying time between coats are the parts that get cut to make a price look good, and they are the parts that decide whether your floor still looks right in ten years.
